Objects as Affirmation

We had a customer come in today who wants her big wedding ring changed into something more contemporary, and even I was surprised at the design decided upon. Not my taste! Funny the notion of beauty and how it really is in the eye of the beholder. She said the new design was ' arty and bold ' and because she herself is very organized and orderly, she wants a ring that is random and and eccentric. Interesting that, how we can use things to express the way we are, as well as the way we would like to be. Needing affirmation of the way we feel inside by wearing it on the outside. Using objects to remind us of ourselves.

feels like 'the notion of beauty' could be examined a bit more... and I like the thought that objects 'remind us of ourselves'... is that why I wear my neck chain?...

I think this is a very true observation and something that I am exploring through my jewellery. I think so many people today are confined to a very rigid working environment and routine that they rarely find the space to express the multifacets of their personalities. That is why I find jewellery such a beautiful thing, It allows for an outward expression or representation of the character inside without being too overwhelming to the observer.

I think that more people today are wearing jewellery for their own satisfaction of nature, to remind themselves of who they are, rather than for a viewer.

Human beings are never quite content with the way things are, are they? We naturally create object all the time, some of them with which to adorn ourselves. Whether to 'beautify' ourselves or make a statement of sorts, it all boils down to the need to recreate or extend ourselves as more than what we are (which is perfect in itself). The chain that is casually worn may merely be for the love of material (shiny) things, as it adds 'salt to food'. Maybe there are times that you take the chain off, when the mood strikes you to be 'naturally you'.. maybe you wear it to remind yourself of your love of jewellery and the human ability to transform his appearance should he wish to. This makes us feel secure, the knowledge that we may dress or undress ourselves according to the mood of the day.

Thank you for visiting my space...

Have a perfect day
